The Chula Vista Nature Center is located in west Chula Vista at 1000 Gunpowder Point Drive, Chula Vista, CA 91910. The Nature Center is located on San Diego Bay approximately seven miles south of downtown San Diego and seven miles north of the international border.
The Chula Vista Nature Center has been open since 1987 and is fully accredited by the American Association of Museums, a distinction held by fewer than 10% of museums in the United States. The Nature Center is also an internationally recognized zoo/aquarium exhibiting native plants and animals. The Chula Vista Nature Center's mission involves educating the public on the importance of coastal resource conservation. This is accomplished in cooperation with various partners through field trips, guided walks, classes, tours, and special projects.
There are interactive exhibits in the Wergeland Family Discovery Center, which describe the history, geology, natural history, and bio-diversity of the Sweetwater Marsh. The collection of plants and animals exhibited at the Chula Vista Nature Center varies by season and availability of appropriate specimens. There are reptiles and amphibians such as boas and king snakes, marine life, such as sharks, rays, bass, crab and jellyfish. There are raptors, shorebirds and waterfowl, owls and eagles.
For the serious birder, the Chula Vista Nature Center/Sweetwater Marsh National Wildlife Refuge offers many birding opportunities. They challenge you to go and find as many of the 224 identified species of the Sweetwater Marsh as you can!
More than 100 volunteers support educational programs at the Nature Center. The volunteers help with education, animal husbandry, and clerical tasks. Animal care and special projects are made possible by community donations.
The Chula Vista Nature Center is proud of its partnerships with the Chula Vista Elementary School District, Sweetwater Union High School District, Southwestern College, San Diego County Department of Education, Sea World San Diego, the San Diego Wild Animal Park, the Birch Aquarium, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
